His Story

The Man Behind the Music

Artist. Visionary. Catalyst.

Marcus as a child in Jersey City

Jersey City

Marcus Henry Brown Waters was born on February 26, 1979, in Jersey City, New Jersey, at Margaret Hague Hospital, to Iris Brown and Mark Waters. From the moment he entered the world, Marcus carried a spirit that brought joy to everyone around him. As a child, he was known for his warm smile, gentle nature, quiet happiness, and the kind of presence that made people love him simply for being himself.

He was a delight — full of joy, full of smiles, and always happy. He loved people, loved his friends, and loved to play. He especially loved his remote control cars. He was sweet, not loud — just a happy child who loved being himself.

A Call to Create

There was never a difference between the way Marcus approached his music and the way he inspired people in real life. He fell in love with music at the age of 13 and began performing at 14, organizing a group called AWC in Jersey City that traveled to different cities and states to minister positive messages through music. He later attended Oral Roberts University, where he pioneered the Mass Reality rap collective, continuing to travel the country and inspire people through rap.

“His music was never just music. It was a call to create.”

The Catalyst

Over the years, Marcus released independent projects, sharpened his production, refined his message, and stayed committed to the gift that lived inside him. His dedication did more than create songs. It created movement. It inspired people in different cities, different states, and especially inside his own home.

Marcus taught those around him not to take the backseat in their destiny. He pushed people to take ownership of their talent and use it with dedication, persistence, perfection, and passion. He would not let you chase a dream alone. He would prune your ideas, work with you, encourage you, challenge you, and make sure you owned your essence with confidence.

Through his music, Marcus expressed his character, intelligence, creativity, emotional depth, and perspective on life in a way that connected powerfully with others. He was more than an artist. He was a visionary, a storyteller, and a man who believed in manifesting, innovating, and making something meaningful out of what life gave him.

“Never seen it done, you better do it first.
Put your affirmations in the universe.”

His Family

The Oldest of Five

A son. A brother. A father. Selfless, inspiring, deeply protective of his own.

His mother, Iris Brown — and the brothers. As the eldest brother to Antoine, Torrell, Darius, and Cortland Brown, Marcus was selfless, inspiring, and deeply protective of his family.

As a devoted son to Iris Brown and Ben Hannah, Marcus was loving, supportive, and caring. In his song Show Love, he gave voice to the weight he carried as the eldest:

“I'm the oldest of five.
My four kin have a father that's locked in.
The system has him.
It can't have them.”

The people he came up with stayed close — childhood friends like Walter and Naeem, the ones he grew up with. Marcus leaves behind countless cherished memories filled with laughter, love, music, and unforgettable moments with those closest to him. He was loved dearly by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family members, all of whom will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Marcus was preceded in death by his father, Mark Waters, and his beloved grandmother, Alyce Waters.

From His Daughters

A Daughter's Reflection

His greatest pride and joy were his two daughters, Tasia and Tierra Waters, whom he shared with their mother, Angel Floyd. These are their words for him.

We never knew this day would come so soon. Your kindness, the love you shared, your listening ear, and the confidence-boosting compliments never ceased to make us smile. Throughout the last two decades of you being our father, no obstacles nor distance could diminish the intensity of the love you had for us.

You taught us to have fearlessness, creativity, and kindness in every room we walk in. One thing we walk away knowing is that you always wanted us to strive to be better than great and that you took pride in being our dad. We will remember you in everything we accomplish and know you would cheer the loudest in the room.
